Tuesday Tech:Palm Pre the iPhone killer?

For anyone that has Sprint service this phone should be a godsend. While it has not been released yet, the Palm Pre (pronounced pree), is poised to be the real dookie. Palm has resurrected themselves from the dead with this new device and Sprint has been chosen as the official launch partner. This also a really good look for Sprint who has been suffering for some time now. For those of you not familiar with the wireless jargon, that simply means that Sprint will be the only company to offer the phone when it releases. This phone is loaded to the gills. It has a 3.1 inch multi-touch screen, integrated Wi-Fi, EV-DO Rev. a(Sprint's high speed data),GPS, 8 gigs of storage, a 3 mega pixel camera with flash and most important, at least for me, a FULL QWERTY KEYBOARD! I have tried the virtual keyboard on the Blackberry Storm and the iPhone and I don't like either of them. The Pre slides out in portrait fashion so that the keyboard is hidden underneath when it is not in use. It also includes an accelerometer that allows it to change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape mode by turning the phone. This is only one of the uses of the accelerometer as I am sure many games will be developed on the new webOS operation system. The phone is finished in a nice glossy piano black that promises to be a finger print magnet. With the date of launch not yet released, Palm has gone on record to say that it will launch in the first half of 2009. I advise existing Sprint customers with an upgrade available to wait for the new heat. For those of us with swag this device will fit the bill and then some. Cop that. Oh yeah, no word on pricing yet but I estimate it to be in the $250-$300 range after applicable rebates. Peep.

This one looks hot. I had a Palm Treo on Sprint for 4+ years and just switched over to AT&T for the iPhone 3G . If I'd have known this was coming, I MIGHT not have switched.

So far this is the only phone I've seen Sprint offer that can actually match some of the innovation that Apple brings to the table. That's where the Samsung Instinct failed, it went for some of the function and missed the heart & soul that people love in the iPhone. Hopefully the Pre is a real challenger & it pushes Apple even harder. Time wil tell...

GX you are right. The closet competitor on Sprint is the Touch Pro. THe downside to that is that it is a Windows Mobile device. We al know how bad windows mobile sucks.
